Summer term has arrived! From personal experience, I know how hard it can be to sit in a two hour class when the bright sun is shining outside and all you want to do is get out there and play. But I have also learned that your summer will be much more enjoyable if you make the commitment to listen in class. Focus. You will have much more time left over to play if you use class time effectively.
Here are some organizational tips that have helped me when I begin a new class:
·
Figure
out your professor’s style.
The first few class sessions are vital to understanding how your
professor teaches. It is helpful to go
to their office hours to meet them and ask them for their tips to success.
·
Prepare
for class. Use reading
assignments as a way to preview for lectures.
Even just a quick survey reading will lead to questions that you can use
as motivation to pay attention in class.
Go to class looking for answers.
·
Decide
how to take notes.
There are many useful ways to take in-class notes (the Cornell note
taking system is one popular option). The
important thing is to find a way that works well for your learning style and
the course setup and then stick to it.
Being consistent in the way you take notes will make reviewing them so
much easier.
·
Start
reviewing immediately!
Review your notes as soon after class as possible and fill in any
details you might have missed. It is a
good idea to make flashcards and summary sheets. Questions about the material will come up in
your review that you will then be able to answer in preparation for exams.
Thank you so much, that was a really inspirational blog post. I'm definitely going to try and get a head start on classes by getting organized before the semester even starts!
